A sunlit scene shows a silver BMW sedan parked on grass in front of a small beige mobile home, with an older rust-colored vehicle partially visible beside it. Warm golden-hour light illuminates trees and a partly cloudy sky in the background. Large white text overlaid across the image reads “DOGS IS GOOD PEOPLE,” with “Barbara S. Rusiecki” in smaller text at the bottom. A small porch with a railing and household items sits to the right of the trailer.

About the Book

Matilda Warbucks has spent her whole life outrunning the wreckage of her childhood—an ice‑cold mother who gave her away, a foster system that taught her survival over trust, and a marriage built on love, ambition, and secrets. When her husband Augustus, now a successful plastic surgeon, shatters their carefully crafted world by fathering a child with his surgical nurse, Matilda loses everything: her marriage, her home, and her sense of who she is.

But when her beloved father dies, leaving her a final request—to reconnect with the sprawling, outrageous MacMooney clan she barely remembers—Matilda stumbles into a world of rough‑edged tradespeople, bawdy humor, fierce loyalty, and unexpected tenderness. They tear down and rebuild her collapsing house… and slowly begin tearing down and rebuilding her, too.

As her sons spiral under the weight of divorce, as secret shames surface, and as an unexpected pregnancy forces her to confront her own flaws, Matilda learns that healing isn’t clean or pretty. It’s muddy, messy, loud, and—if you’re lucky—shared with people who love you enough to show up with a sledgehammer.

Blisteringly funny, heartbreakingly honest, and full of unforgettable characters, this is a story about trauma and tenderness, forgiveness and fury, and the wild, miraculous power of the family we choose—especially when they choose us back.

About the Author

Barbara Rusiecki graduated from Pitt and Arizona State before becoming a special education teacher and leaving her clerical life in academic medicine behind. Since then, she has enjoyed spending many years teaching challenging young students to read, write and do math in multiple, inner-city, at-risk public schools.

In her spare time, she picked up her pen as a freelance writer and has many publications in small presses and special-needs publications. Daily, she can be seen walking Giuseppe or G, her son Ryan’s dog. She enjoys learning French, gardening, baking, swimming, and traveling.

She and G agree that Dogs is Good People, her debut novel, is worth the read. Their fingers and paws are crossed that you will enjoy reading it as much as she has enjoyed writing it. Bonne Lecture! (Happy Reading!)
